The Showdown: Money vs Abundance

While most people claim to want more wealth, the truth is, most of us are nowhere near achieving the lifestyle or financial bliss we want. In this article, I take abundance head on and discuss exactly why abundance is so sneaky and deceptive.

What do you think of when I say the word, “abundance”? For many, this is an enlightened synonym for money, cash, or wealth. In other words, abundance is directly related to our finances. Full disclosure: I love money.

Now, before you put my head on a stake or accuse me of being the next Bernie Madoff, let me explain. I once heard a wise woman say,

Money isn’t everything, but it touches everything that is. – Suzanne Evans

Trust me. I’ve been there. When you’re in poverty – either real or imagined – it seems like nothing in your life works. You can’t do the activities you want, opportunities seem rare, and even having the basics can be a struggle. Thus, it makes sense to want to be friends with money because it’s a powerful tool that can help you live the life you want. Going further, the way money does or doesn’t show up for you can be an indicator of other issues in your life, from being too generous and always giving too much (undercharging), to being blissfully unaware (indifference), or being chronically unfulfilled (overspending).

Still, as much as I adore money, I have a real problem with the term “abundance.” First of all, abundance is often a way out for people who aren’t comfortable with money at all. Abundance feels safe, less selfish, and carries less emotional baggage than cash. Unfortunately, that kind of energy just isn’t attractive to cash flow. What’s more, the term abundance is just too brief. It’s too close-minded.

True abundance does include financial well-being, but it’s so much more.

As unlimited beings, we deserve more. As human beings, creation and increase is in our DNA. So what about the other facets of abundance? Time, healthy bodies, loving relationships, connection to a power that’s greater than ourselves, and appreciation of nature. How often do you stop to feel  blessed for the simple ability to watch a sunset? Do you appreciate the miracle that you’re alive, healthy, and that the millions of functions that happen in your body are all working smoothly and effortlessly? How often do you appreciate a hug from a loved one or the roof over your head, however humble?

You see, it’s in all of these moments that abundance lives. Money is grand (and necessary), but let’s not forget the rest of our wealth. We live in a magnificent Universe and the more we appreciate that, the more of the good things – yes, even money – will appear. After all, we bring about what we think about.

My wish for you today is that you can take a moment and appreciate the true abundance in your life. Here’s to your abundance – in whatever ways it may show up for you.
